Tuck Comb Dolls were hand carved wooden dolls from the early 1800's. They are named for the "tuck comb" carved in their hair which were usually painted yellow or gold. They were jointed at the shoulders, elbows, and knees with wood pegs. The level of detail in carving of the face, hands and feet varied with every doll. Their head and shoulders were painted as well as their arms below the elbows and their legs below the knees. They had red shoes because at the time, red shoes were worn only by girls and women that were not married.
